Could this be the oldest photo of Brighton Scouts?

Written by Justin Cruttenden on Friday, 14 August 2009 11:18.

Brendan Barber all the way from Perth in Western Australia has sent us this photo, hoping some of our members can shed some light on it's forgotten secrets.

Brendan writes:

It was found by my dad when he was finalising his uncle’s estate a few years back. The uncle was a bachelor who lived in Freshfield Road, Brighton all his life; he was our last living connection to Brighton. We seem to think the photo is in the period 1900 to 1915, simply going on the other belongings it was with. This could possibly indicate my great grandfather (Leslie Barber) or a great uncle (Frederick Griffiths) are in the group, however this is really only guessing. Frederick Griffiths was killed in action in France during World War One.

We think it must hold some family significance due to it being kept all this time and that someone did write the slogan on the top of the photo.

If you can help me with the secrets of the photo, such as when probably taken and/or names of people, that would be just wonderful. In any case I think you will find the photo to be interesting, especially with your hundred year celebrations coming up soon.

Written by Stephen Cropp on Wednesday, 19 March 2008 00:41.

In February 1910 B-P, together with the Earl of March, inspected over 400 boys at a camp held in Preston Park. Troops from Brighton, Aldrington, Burgess Hill, Hassocks, Horsham, Lewes, Plumpton, Ringmer and Worthing were represented. By then, Brighton had 20 groups with 14 of them at the camp.

2005 : A new Caving Complex for Parkwood

Written by Stephen Cropp on Wednesday, 19 March 2008 01:08.

Scout in the Swallows and Amazons Caving ComplexAs the Brighton Scout Association prepare for an influx in visitors to their unique caving complex this spring, the Big Lottery Fund takes a trip down memory lane with the people behind the project to find out how winning that crucial vote back in October 2005 helped them to build something special for young people across Sussex.

Over a year ago, Brighton Scout Association took part in the first ever People’s Millions. In a live televised vote they had to win over hearts and minds for an over ground caving complex at Parkwood - the official campsite in Poynings, Sussex for Brighton District Scouts. Competing against them was a children’s play project on the Isle of Wight. It was tough competition and both groups were worthy of the £50,000 on offer.

After going through the application, short listing and televised voting stages the Brighton Scouts eventually won the people’s vote. More than 3,000 viewers of ITV Meridian South voted in the televised showdown and helped to make the scouts’ dream of creating a caving complex come true.
